Earthquake Hazards. The USGS monitors and reports on earthquakes, assesses earthquake impacts and hazards, and conducts targeted research on the causes and effects of earthquakes. We undertake these activities as part of the larger National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), a four-agency partnership established by Congress.
Earthquake hazard, also referred to as seismic hazard, describes what level of ground shakings at the earth’s surface is expected due to potential future earthquakes. Ground shaking is the most relevant effect of an earthquake; however, it may also trigger secondary phenomena such as tsunamis, landslides or rock falls.
Earthquakes shake the ground we live on, but they also cause ruptures within the earth, trigger landslides and may even turn soil to liquid. Every part of California has some level of earthquake risk, but some of them can be mitigated.
